Immigration is rarely thought of as a women's issue, but three-quarters of immigrants to the United States are women and children. Since We Belong Together's inception in 2010, the campaign has elevated the needs of immigrant women and children who contribute to our country's economy and society amidst a dysfunctional and punitive immigration system that provides fewer visas to women, makes it more difficult for them to report domestic abuse, and, since July, has held tens of thousands of women and children seeking refuge in detention centers.
It's time for a new way forward.
We Belong Together's newly updated report, The Heart of the Matter: Women, Children and the Way Forward on Immigration Policy provides context, profiles of women impacted by current policies, and concrete recommendations for immigration policy that treats women fairly and keeps families together. The report evaluates President Obama's November, 2014 executive actions on immigration and likely benefits for immigrant women and families and demonstrates the need for additional steps for both the White House and Congress to take.
